best of the first round is that results force us once again, to look and take the country as whole. Lima is Peru, and vice versa. But they also force us to recognize that suffer from ills atavistic: no memory, racism lives on the surface, lack common sense in the political class, money above human development, lying is a habit, "resiliency" a strategy coexistence, indifference and so much more can be added here that the list could easily grow. Of course there are famous and remarkable people. But these (and other) evils are in our environment. It seems that now have conspired to put us to a grim future and those who led Peru to a vicious and corrupt dictatorship again be an option for millions of people. Where was to stop the growth of Peru advertised? What grew? Are we better?
Not surprisingly, for example, that during the first stage, the candidates agree on one thing: education is wrong. Go novelty. After this match promises ripped improvement: more schools, more divers, more shoes, more poles, more computers, more technological institutes, more tests to teachers, better pay, better breakfast, new rosters and even did not miss who thinks that the solution would come from the sky, not God, who is now busier than ever with us, but a satellite launched into space. It seems absurd but that and two or three trivial promises reduced the formulary. Reduce
solutions to it not only shows the priorities or the populism that has in mind, but obviously not understanding what it is the problem. It is no longer clear that education takes place in a classroom. Nobody has mentioned. Any reform has to be incarnated in the relationship building between teacher and student. There is no education without someone to teach and no one to learn, nor are given without libraries, good books, pencils and notebooks. Few things are so obvious and fundamental as that.
All are silent how they will ensure students to complete high school with better analytical skills, with improved performance in reading comprehension or mathematical reasoning, with adequate provision to justify personal views and respect the opinions of others, with an ethical attitude that enables them to participate in a society peacefully and in solidarity, with a general culture that allows them to be located in the world and in history. They all insist on the technological dimension, but who do become concerned citizens? Why did they import the arts and humanities? If it were from the start of the campaign, from April 10 the discussion has depleted to the point that all you lose sleep is the Constitution and the continuity of the economic model. Therefore, "we must remember and insist that the country is more than the management of its economy and the welfare of their companies (...) A country's history, dignity, culture, identity and especially the future" (Masks, 14.4. 11).
Education is the future. So clear and precise. It is unacceptable that those who endorsed the killing of the Cantuta and Barrios Altos, sterilizations of poor women, the "authentic interpretation" or those involved in the purchase of journalists, judges, congressmen or who believe that only State leads to the development and deny freedom and private initiative, are they, those engaged in education morning in Peru. Do you imagine those subjects discussing the importance of ethics training or comprehensive colleges and universities? As
PUCP is backed by a long and fruitful work of recognized service to Peru, through the efforts and dedication of teachers, students and administrators, as part of a modern educational model, rooted in a comprehensive education in tolerance and freedom, just as or perhaps better, for that reason I have to insist that education is also part of the dilemma that live. The future is not confined to the behavior of the stock exchange or the exchange rate. It's so much more. Education is thus in the spotlight. Do not be naive but neither mistake again.
